About the
2008 Southern California VIP Mentors
Compassion Award

Webster's dictionary defines compassion as:

"Deep awareness of the suffering of another coupled with the wish to relieve it."

VIP Mentors seeks to bestow the honor of its Compassion Award on a criminal defense attorney and a public defender who work relentlessly to defend the accused without judgment and with a commitment to the defendant that goes above and beyond an attorney' normal legal duties.

For example, we are looking for attorneys who have helped their clients to enter or stay in a drug treatment program, arranged for employment and housing opportunities, given assistance with family problems, help their client achieve some success and personal growth while in a prison, county jail or a restitution center.

Attorney/mentors in VIP's program are afforded the ongoing opportunity to show the kind of compassion this award represents with their mentees. We know that there are other lawyers in the community, not in our program, who represent the same values and personal commitment to their clients as a VIP Mentor has for his or her mentee. These lawyers personally extend themselves through their compassion for their clients. They not only afford them the opportunity to navigate the complexities of the legal system but help their clients to a better, richer life. VIP Mentors seeks to honor these attorneys.

Many lawyers have the technical skills to win a case for the accused. But few lawyers have the compassion it takes to win the VIP Mentors' Compassion Award.
